And Jesus said, “Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”This begs the questions –what is this ‘truth’? And how free shall it make you/us? Shall we say one is free when he can’t think independently? When his understanding of virtues is vices? When all he says is ‘I study for my family and myself’? When he accepts willingly to be misled and then blames that on the other party? When he veers off the road of brotherhood?
The Turkana people will tell you their philosophy revolves around three factors; time, space and the unknown. How does this relate to truth and freedom? Let’s dig deep into it! Freedom is the reward for telling the truth. Truth is living to the best of our conscience. What can you say of a person who disregards the input of his conscience? Can you say that person is free? No, he is not free! He is a prisoner of other peoples thinking. This is a declaration that he can’t think hence can’t act! This inability to think and act is a cause to worry. Then there are those who think but never act. These humans are like lame ducks. They only aspire to move but can’t move. They are imprisoned by the fear of not moving to the unknown. They say to themselves, “Better this life than what is found there. It is better to suffer here than trying that.” They acknowledge that their state of life is not promising but the fear of moving is locking their pursuit of the unknown.
Again, there are those who act but can’t think. They are like a processing machine. It can’t process anything unless a raw material is pumped into it. They possess unused energies ready to be used for any ‘action’. They too are prisoners of other peoples’ conscience. And this is where the majority of humanity falls. So this is a dangerous group. They can’t be wished away. They form a huge chunk of partners in the global development. But the good thing for them is that they believe in action. You don’t need much to win them. Just act and they will follow.
Back to the three elements of the Turkana philosophy; humanity lives within certain time limits. We are not eternal beings. We are born. And of course, we have to die .But the point is; what do we do between birth and death? We live somewhere, and that is space. What we do there will determine the landscape of that space. That landscape is a reflection of what we think and how we’ve maximized our time. And the unknown is the ‘push’ we need to live and act. It is the restlessness of human beings. It is the pursuit of knowing the truth about ourselves and using that truth for the betterment of our lives and space. You know what? You can only be free when you accept the truth! And the truth is letting your conscience rule over you! This is the powerful gift God gave us. Why should we discard it?
Food for thought! When you say, a politician is deceiving you, ask yourself why you accept to be deceived. Admission of deception is approval of deception! You can correct this! You have the power but you are not willing to make it real. It is upon you to define how to make it real. WATCH OUT!
